Setting up Your Network Connection

YouTube Video (Networking a 7160 - same for other HD Toppys):

For a wired connection:

  1. Connect your Ethernet cable from your router to the Topfield recorder.
  2. Press MENU>INSTALLATION>NETWORK SETTING>IP SETTING.
  3. Select WIRED/WIRELESS LAN. Then select WIRED as the preferred connection.
  4. It is recommended to use a dynamic IP address by the router therefore select DHCP as the connection type. However if a static connection is set then please refer to your router for an IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS.
  5. Once a connection has been set scroll down to activate profile and press the OK button on the remote.
  6. A successful connection will populate all the IP settings and the Level/Quality bars on the TV screen will show a high percentage level.

For a wireless connection (TMS Toppys and TF-T6000):

  1. Connect the USB wireless dongle to the USB port on the PVR.
  2. Press MENU>INSTALLATION>NETWORK SETTING>IP SETTING.
  3. Select WIRED/WIRELESS LAN. Then select WIRELESS as the preferred connection.
  4. Select AP list and press OK. A list of available networks will be shown, then select your personal network.
  5. Once network is selected choose the security mode WPA/WPA2/WEP. Select your WPA/WPA2/WEP algorithm according to your router setting.
  6. Enter the pre-shared key which is also known as your network password. (Note: Network password must be exactly the same as your router setting including Upper/Lower case and any numbers used)
  7. A successful connection will populate all the IP settings and the Level/Quality bars on the TV screen will show a high percentage level. If the fields are not populated check the password and any security settings.

Note 1: After selecting activate please allow up to 5 seconds for fields to populate.

Note 2: Most routers can be accessed via a web browser. Refer to your Router user guide on how to access router setting.

For wireless connection - TF-T6211

To set up a wireless connection follow the steps below:

  1. Attach the USB wireless dongle to one of the Toppys USB Ports
  2. Press the Menu key, and select Android, then select Settings. The first setting is for networking. Ethernet networking on Yes by default, however you need to turn on Wireless networking - change the setting to Yes. The Toppy will search for wireless networks, and you select the one you want. The settings for the Toppy are similar to those for the TMS Toppys.

If you have problems with the network access, try disabling Ethernet networking - change the setting to Off.

Best was to set IP address

If you regularly access your Toppy via ftp or TMSRemote, it is helpful if the Toppy always has the same IP address. To be successful you need to set a "static IP address" (Toppy setting) and a "reserved IP address' (router setting). The same IP address is assigned in each case.

Static IP address (Toppy setting)

For each network profile you have the choice of allowing the DHCP sever allocate an IP address to the Toppy each time it starts-up, or you can set a static IP address. Before changing to a static IP address, make a note of the default gateway and the IP address allocated to the Toppy. When you change to the Static IP address, some of the entries may chance.

Gateway IP address

It is important to make sure that the IP address for the gateway is correct (usually the only problem is that the second last group is changed to 0).

Toppy IP address

Usually the Toppys IP address will be fully populated after changing to static IP, however, the second last grouping may have changed to 0 (it must be the same as for the gateway), you can leave the last group as it is, or change it. Do not change it to an IP address that has been assigned to another network device.

Reserved IP address (router setting)

By reserving an IP address, it is not available for allocation by the DHCP server. You should reserve the IP address corresponding to the static IP address assigned to the Toppy. The procedure for doing so depends on the router. You will need to know the MAC address of the Toppys NIC (Network interface card). The MAC address is on the rear of the Toppy and is also given on the System Information for the Toppy. Some routers, such as those made by D-Link facilitates the reservation process by cloning the IP address and MAC address. Others such as those made by Netgear, usually require you to manually enter both the MAC address and the IP address.
