Lose Settings On Return From Standby

The Nov-07 has introduced a new bug where the Topfield sometimes forgets some settings when it returns from Standby. See this forum post by tango 10 Dec 2007.

This bug was introduced in the Nov-07 (v5.3.22) firmware and appears to be a side effect of Topfield trying to fix the Power Restore bug (see here for details).

With the Nov-07 f/w, the bug appears if:

  • the unit is brought out of standby, and
  • the time is not set (ie. date is the default of 01/01/04), and
  • it may only happen if the current channel is not the first LCN in the list of channels (why?).

With the Mar-08 f/w, the bug appears if:

  • the unit is brought out of standby, and
  • the time is not set (ie. date is the default of 01/01/04), and
  • it may only happen if the current channel is not the first LCN in the list of channels (why?), and
  • you use manual time.

With the Mar-09 f/w, the bug appears to be fixed.

To Recreate

(you may need to connect a yellow composite cable after this):

  1. Set time mode to Manual time
  2. Set Video Output to YUV, and RF Channel to 29
  3. Change the channel to anything but the first LCN (eg. LCN 5 not LCN 2)
  4. Put the unit in standby
  5. Pull the power plug (to simulate a power failure)
  6. Turn the unit back on
  7. The video output will now be RGB.

The Symptoms

The Topfield does a "semi" factory reset. It is different from a "full" factory reset as:

  • scanned channels, and timers are not lost
  • Time Mode setting (ie. Auto/Manual) is not changed
  • Sound Mode setting (ie. Stereo/Mono/Left/Right) is not changed
  • Favorites are not forgotten, but you are no longer in the favorites list.

Settings that are reset the same as a Factory Reset are:

  • OSD Transparency reset to 5%
  • Info Box Display Time reset to 5 sec
  • Info Box Position reset to +0 line
  • Time Shifting reset to enable
  • VCR Scart Type reset to Standard
  • RF Output reset to PAL G
  • RF Channel reset to 36

Settings that are reset differently to a Factort Reset are:

  • TV Type reset to PAL (instead of Multi with a Factory Reset)
  • Video Output reset to RGB (instead of YUV with a Factory Reset)
  • TV Aspect Ratio reset to 4:3 (instead of 16:9 with a Factory Reset)
  • 16:9 Display Format reset to LetterBox (instead of Full with a Factory Reset)

One big impact of this bug is that a yellow composite cable may be needed after this bug happens. ie. if you connect with a scart cable to YUV, then the resetting to RGB will require a composite cable to see the picture (and allow you to change the Video Output in the menu).
