Fixing Power Supplies For The 7000 and 7100

Note

Not all caps present faulty by visual inspection, but this doesn't mean they are not equally as knackered as those that are visually leaking etc.

The only real way to be sure is to test them, and failing that replace as per the guide as at one time or another I have had to replace all of these caps thus the reason they have made it into the repair list. Better to be safe than sorry.

Information for the ORTP-991 PSU model found in most 7000 & 7100

For those that experience issues with the style of PSU board labelled ORTP-991, here is my recommendation as to what to replace based on what I have needed to replace in the past… I have named many additional caps as these can and probably will cause issues in the future so best do them now…

ORTP-991 PSU Board Rev 1.0 (NOT FOR P-176 Rev 1.0 PSU Board)

C28, C33, C34 – Replace with 2200uf 16v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps, be careful of the size of the caps you are ordering to ensure that C28 fits in ok.

C21, C23 – Replace with 1000uf 25v – Best to use Panasonic FR "L" Series (EEU-FR1C102L) for C21, as the FR low impedence series is a very tall but fairly thin capacitor for 1000uf 25v, and it fits in perfectly, there is not much room for a wide capacitor at that location.

C24, C31, C35 – Replace with 1000uf 16v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

C16, C17, C44 – Replace with 47uf 50v – C44 is in the High Voltage part of the PSU and has been responsible for several 7100 no power faults that I have repaired, similar to C9 on the old TF5000PVRT.

C25 (OLD STYLE PSU) – On the older style ORTP-991 PSU – there is a 1000uf 10v cap at this location, replace it with 1000uf 16v same as C24, C31, C35 above..

C25 (REVISED PSU) – There is no capacitor at this location on the slightly newer style ORTP-991 PSU – BUT in this series there should be a 470uf 16v capacitor at C29, so replace this instead with the same value. Only applies to the newer style ORTP-991 PSU, as the older style has a non-electrolytic cap at C29 and it does not need changing.

C22 – Replace with 330uf 25v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps, be careful of the size of the caps you are ordering to ensure that C22 fits in ok.

Unfortunately, there is no way of distinguishing between the REVISED 991 PSU and the OLDER 991 PSU, as the revision info printed on the board is identical. The only way to tell is by way of C25 will either have a cap in it or it wont.

This should ensure that you get many more years out of your Toppy yet. Again as has been stressed by others on numerous occasions throughout this forum (and myself too) – DO NOT USE SUNTAN CAPS from Jaycar or other dealers that may stock them.

Purchase from Farnell (Element 14) or RS Components, and best to use Panasonic FR Series Caps or Nichicon HE Series caps

Information for the P-176 PSU model found in some 7100 machines

If you experience issues with the style of PSU board labelled P-176, here is my recommendation as to what to replace…

P-176 PSU Board Rev 1.0 – INSUNG ELECTRONICS (NOT FOR ORTP-991 Rev 1.0 PSU Board – SEE ABOVE FOR THAT)

C5, C25, C26 – Currently 33uf 50v, Replace with 47uf 50v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

C8, C15 – Currently 1500uf 10v, Replace with 1500uf 16v – Best to use Panasonic FR "L" Series for this, as the FR series is very tall but still only 10mm thin and fit perfectly. (EEU-FR1C152L)

C19 – Currently 1000uf 16v, Replace with 1000uf 25v – Again best to use Panasonic FR "L" Series for this, as above. (EEU-FR1E102L)

C12 – Currently 2200uf 10v, Replace with 2200uf 10v – Again best to use Panasonic FR Series for this, as above. (EEU-FR1A222L)

C9, C13, C29 – Currently 1000uf 10v, Replace with 1000uf 16v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

C16 – Currently 1000uf 16v, Replace with 1000uf 16v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

C22, C23, C24 – Currently 330uf 25v, Replace with 330uf 25v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

C21 – Currently 470uf 16v, Replace with 470uf 16v – Use high quality Panasonic FR series or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

This should ensure that you get many more years out of your Toppy yet. Again as has been stressed by others on numerous occasions throughout this forum (and myself too) – DO NOT USE SUNTAN CAPS from Jaycar or other dealers that may stock them.

Purchase from Farnell (Element 14) or RS Components, and if you have not already guessed, I strongly recommend Panasonic FR Series Caps or Nichicon HE Series Caps.

They last the distance!! If you can't get those, go for next best which would be Panasonic FM Series…

Where possible, if 2 caps exist in the panasonic series for the same value and one has an L on the end of the part number (same part number other than that), use the one with the "L" in its part number. Not all Panasonic caps in the FR series (or any other series for that matter) are available in the "Low Impedance" range, but where they are, RS Components & Farnell usually sell both.

Example EEUFR1A471 & EEUFR1A471L. (Example only…)
